The mysterious tale of the Golem takes place in the part of Old Town – Josefov. The tale goes that in the 16th century, the Prague’s rabbi named Low was seeking a way to protect the local Jewish people from pogroms and the whim of unpredictable rulers up at Prague Castle. He moulded a superhuman from the mud of the Vltava river and used supernatural power to bring him to life. Rabbi Low must always insert a shem (a clay tablet bearing the name of God) into his forehead.

The beast was around 2,5 meters high with illuminated eyes, thick belt around his waist. Rabbi Low  always  made Golem rest on Saturdays – Sabbath. However, one day he forgot, and the Golem went to the Ghetto alone, destroying everything in its path. Rabbi managed to catch him in the end and removed the shem. He never made him alive again, and the legend says that he was stored in the Old New Synagogue’s attic where he remain hidden till these days.

Rabi Low was a real historical figure, his gravestone is in the Old Jewish Cemetery. However, there is no evidence he ever created a Golem, the legend has continued to captivate local people and visitors.
